All things have a name by which they are defined. Amongst the named are the many long-forgotten gods that dwell within the world brought about by the prayers, fears and desires of humanity. In the famine-stricken and riot-plagued city of Edo, alarming events are visited upon the populace by these otherworldly beasts.

Descending from the mountaintops or rising from the earth are these old gods, the Youi. For nearly 25 years Yukiatsu Ryudo has wandered the countryside of Japan posing as a bodyguard, living the life of a gambler and thief, all the while denying his name.

Through a chance encounter with a Youi and the members of the Office of Barbarian Knowledge Enforcement, Yukiatsu is forced to face the life he's been running from and rediscover his long hidden power of Ayagami, the ability to find true names and use them as a weapon to exorcise these beasts by plaguing the material world.
In the year of Tenpo 14, Yoi, monsters from another world attack Edo. Those who fight against them are members of Bansha Aratemesho. In public, Bansha Aratemsho is known as an organization to study foreign books. In fact, they are a organization dedicated to destroying the Yoi. These warriors are called Ayakashi. They gather information of odd events in the country, and are sent to destroy Yoi who appear. They are generally very strange people. For example, a guy who has lost his memory, a girl who dresses like a man. They have special powers with which to beat the Yoi.
In the 14th year of the Tenpo era (1843), life in Edo is grim for many; famines plague the land, frugality is enforced in many aspects of life, and social standing rules the day. Yuki is a floater who has twice run away from the floater ghetto - an act that has marked him for execution. But when a chance encounter leads him into a fight with a yoi, a mysterious monster from another world, Yuki finds himself being recruited into the Bansha Aratamesho, an organization charged with hunting down and destroying yoi. For Yuki has the power of ayagami, which draws out the true meaning of words and allows Yuki to create weapons from the kanji in the names of his enemies. Yuki must make a choice: will he continue to run, rejecting the powers of the Other World, or will he join the Ayashi in the fight against the yoi?
