Sometime during the 21st century, a terrorist act destroys a scientific research facility built over the tomb of the ancient Sumerian king Gilgamesh. Occurring on October 10th, the catastrophic event is dubbed Twin X (for its date, 10-10) and produces an earth-wide electromagnetic imbalance that transforms the sky into an undulating swirl of colour known as 'the Sheltering Sky'. As war, famine, and disease wreak havoc on the weakened planet, two supernatural forces engage in a life-or-death struggle for world domination: Orga, a band of mutant psychics led by a mysterious countess; and Gilgamesh, an army of winged assassins under the charge of the evil scientist who triggered Twin X, Enkidu. Thrust into this calamitous milieu are orphaned brother and sister Kiyoko and Tatsuya, who find themselves torn between the opposing factions in a deadly battle of shifting alliances.
After an explosion at an archaeological excavation research facility in the Middle East, the world is changed in unthinkable ways. The sky is suddenly a mirror, electronic devices mysteriously no longer work properly, and children who are born after this point seem to have strange, metaphysical powers. Society is but a shell of its former self, and in the midst of the clandestine forces that brought about this eerie apocalypse is an elite group of young, powerful mutants who are working to restore the world under the direction of a woman known only as The Countess.
The story centers on a brother and sister, Tatsuya and Kiyoko, the children of a scientist at the Twin X facility.
Two siblings, Kiyoko and Tatsuya, live in a future reshaped by a terrorist attack known only as "Twin X". In this terrible new world, advanced technology such as computers and radios no longer function and even the very sky has become something terrifyingly alien. With the siblings' mother dead, they are hunted by loan sharks who want recompense for her debt as well as a mysterious Countess who wants them for her own reasons. Even worse, they are also coveted by their father, the terrorist who caused the "Twin X", Gilgamesh!
