Having barely finished logging in for his first time into the game known as The World R: 2 then Haseo is attacked by a PK (Player Killer), a type of player who kills other in-game players for fun or profit. After coming to his aid the mysterious leader of the Twilight Brigade , Ovan reveals Haseo has a particular gift . Intrigued, Haseo decides to join Ovan s Guild and accompany Shino, Tabby and Sakisaka in their quest for a legendary object: The Key of the Twilight .

This object is also coveted by another Guild, the powerful and respected TaN, lead by Naobi who is monitoring the every move of Ovan. But does this legendary item really exist? And more importantly what is it?
After the destruction of "The World" in 2015, CC Corporation rebuilt the game using data from what was previously to be another game. "The World R:2" was then released in 2016. A newcomer to the game, Haseo, is instantly PKed and then revived by a mysterious man known as Ovan. With the problem of PKs occupying the game, Haseo soon after receives help from a female Harvest known as Shino. Amidst curiosity and confusion, Haseo is lead to joining the guild known as the Twilight Brigade. The guild that searches for the legendary object known as the "Key of the Twilight". Set before the .hack//G.U. game.
Years after the fantasy MMORPG known as 'The World' suffered massive system failure, it has returned. Upgraded and re-written, the current incarnation of 'The World' gives players the freedom to find high adventure, embark on quests for treasure, and battle each other in arenas and tournaments. Player-Killers have become commonplace, however, and prey upon those weaker than they. Haseo, a careless player, was saved from such a fate by members of the Twilight Brigade - a guild with a legendary quest. Joining with the Twilight Brigade, they take on "The World" with all of its wonders and dangers. Will they find what they seek, and will Haseo be able to save those that mean the most to him from the unexplainable effects of 'The World'?
