A world in which one's happiness and misfortunes, even their lives are controlled by "luck"... In this world, there are three identical looking people in existence. Each of these three split between them an energy-like force called "Tera." This energy can be attributed to the amount of "Luck" or "Life Energy" that an individual possesses.

Between those three, the one with the largest share of Tera is called the "Root" and the two possessing a lesser amount are called the "Sub." If a Sub should ever meet up with another person that looks just like them, they will die. Their Tera will then be absorbed by the remaining two. If two Subs run into each other, they both perish, leaving the entire amount of Tera to be absorbed by the Root. That individual then becomes a "Master Root" and comes into possession of an enormous amount of luck and leads a life with success at every turn. This is the hidden truth of existence in the World of Humans and is called the "Doppeliner System."
High school student Ibuki Keita has been haunted by misfortune for as long as he can remember. For no apparent reason, everyone around him dies tragically. Ultimately, he refuses to become too close to anyone, even his childhood friend Akane. This leaves Keita alone in a life full of misery and disgrace.
While eating at his favorite ramen shop one evening, Keita meets a strange young girl named Kuro. Possessing abilities that surpass that of a normal human being, Kuro classifies herself as a Mototsumitama. She explains to Keita about "Terra," a life-energy force split between three identical looking people; a global phenomenon dubbed the "Doppeliner System." As a Mototsumitama, Kuro guards the "Coexistence Equilibrium," the beings that protect the flow of Terra around the world. Keita refuses to believe her story, until he is caught up in the crossfire of this hidden world. On the verge of death, he makes a contract with Kuro, unbeknownst to its true meaning. Now he is bound to Kuro, and must be with her at all times. Could Keita's misfortune possibly get any greater?

Beyond the knowledge of most people, the world contains a dark secret: of every person in the world, there exist two identical copies (called Doppeliners) with the same body and mind. Among the three, however, is distributed only a finite amount of fortune; should they ever encounter one another, the one with a smaller portion dies and the remainder is distributed until only one, the Master Root, survives. Keita Ibuki lives his day-to-day life as ignorant of this as everyone else until he stumbles upon a mysterious young girl named Kuro who explains to him these secrets of the world. Despite not wanting to have anything to do with her or the danger that inevitably seems to follow, their fates become intertwined and he finds that the Doppeliner system has more to do with his past than he realizes.
