Hanabi (meaning "fireworks") is Hinata's sister and the youngest daughter of the leader of the Hyūga clan, Hiashi Hyūga. She initially​ demonstrated more talent than Hinata at a young age, which led Hiashi to focus more attention on her training to rear her into the next heir of the clan.

Years later she leads Team 15, retaining her father's strict training and disciplining as her team's Jōnin. Despite this she shows a laidback attitude with her Genin while off duty and often dotes on her nephew, Boruto, and her niece, Himawari.
