Excel Saga is a one-of-a kind work of art that can only be described as the ultimate parody of anime. From the opening credits – a rather odd spoof of Japanese pop videos – to the ending song featuring
Menchi the dog singing/barking a plaintive ballad while a human interpreter translates for viewers, nothing is sacred in the world of
Excel Saga. Excel Saga contains the chronically over-challenged and understaffed secret ideological organization of ACROSS , whose goal is to conquer the city of F. It contains your complete daily requirements of Martian princesses, afro-wearing action heroes, mysterious governmental agencies, space butlers, deranged comic book authors, androgynous prisoners in iron masks, annoying roommates, removable moustaches and a generous supply of adorably cute aliens bent on galactic domination. Excel Saga contains one emergency food supply/singing dog and one Excel, the most certifiably insane teenage girl to ever walk the face of the planet.
Hyperactive Excel does anything and everything to try to please her lord, Ilpalazzo, who wants to take over the planet. Excel’s misadventures takes her and her partner, the ever-dying Hyatt, all over the world, meeting several strange people as they go. Everything is bizarre and goofy, as any kind of anime or entertainment genre gets mocked and spoofed.
F City, F Prefecture: the battleground where good and evil have finally chosen to decide once and for all who will rule the world…or at least that’s the general idea! Neither side seems up for the task, as surviving the brutality of everyday life is enough of a chore. On the side of evil is the organization of Across, its only member the loudmouthed and abrasive Excel who struggles just to put food in her stomach; on the side of good, three disenfranchised, unemployed bachelors whose only pursuit in life is romance. Add in alien invasions, jungle warfare, and Mexican immigrant laborers to Japan, and this war doesn’t seem likely to be ending soon!
