Several years after the end of a war, the city of Toshima has fallen into decay and been taken over by the crime syndicate Viscio. There, the head of the syndicate, Il Rey, has convened the battle game “Igura.” Meanwhile,
Akira, falsely accused of a crime, has made a deal to earn his pardon: go to Toshima, defeat Il Rey, and destroy the syndicate.
After being devastated in the third World War (known as The Third Division), Japan was divided in two. Several years after the end of the war, a crime organization called Vischio has taken control of the destroyed city of Toshima (formerly Tokyo, Japan’s capital city), where they are holding a battle game known as “Igura”. The main character, a young man named Akira, is falsely accused of a crime. Once arrested, a mysterious woman appears before him, offering him freedom if he agrees to participate in Igura and defeat Igura’s strongest man: the king, or “Il-re”. The story follows Akira’s life in the harsh, lawless Toshima as he fights both to survive and to unravel the mysteries developing around him.
Once the undefeated champion of the street fighting game Bl@ster, Akira now fights for an entirely different cause. Having been framed for murder and given the choice of life in prison or exoneration for a price, he chose to take the latter, heading for the lawless district of Toshima. There, Akira is to fight in Igura, a game where the winner of each match receives special tags, and the loser loses his life. Alongside his longtime friend Keisuke and experienced Igura competitor Rin, Akira must now battle it out in Igura, try to avoid the sadistic enforcers that roam the streets, and complete his mission: to defeat Il Re and take down the drug company Vischio.
