Struggle for the Matterhorn (German: Der Kampf ums Matterhorn) is a 1928 German-Swiss silent drama film co-directed by Mario Bonnard and Nunzio Malasomma and starring Luis Trenker, Marcella Albani, and Alexandra Schmitt. The film is part of the popular cycle of mountain films of the 1920s and 1930s. Art direction was by Heinrich Richter. Based on a novel by Carl Haensel, the film depicts the battle between British and Italian climbers to be the first to climb the Matterhorn. Trenker later remade the film as The Challenge in 1938.
Die große Sehnsucht Die große Sehnsucht (1930) Character: Himself,
This is a real curiosity; at best a reasonable film, but also a charming little gem. There is a story (in the line of "A Star is Born"), but this merely serves as an excuse, as it is more importantly a kind of moving encyclopedia of about 35 stars making their debut in a talkie (although some of them had already made one talkie), of the technical sound possibilities and of film making. Besides all that, it is entertaining and sometimes hilarious and it has fine one-liners that split my side. The film is also remarkable for making mock of typical German film genres (like the overly sweet romances involving the military), of too heavy acting and of film making in general. I have to mention this one: a short, hysterically funny parody of "Der blaue Engel". What this film in fact says is: do not take any film too seriously. (J. Steed)
Es leuchten die Sterne Es leuchten die Sterne (1938) Character: Gast
German all-star musical from 1938 that was a big commercial success.
Der Ruf des Nordens Der Ruf des Nordens (1929) Character: Peter Helling
Peter Helling, the only survivor of a polar expedition, returns once more to the eternal ice. Why he calls his fate out again, what has happened? At that time he had set out with his best friend Svensson, to search for the missing friend of the woman they both love and for which they fought. In desperation, the men drag through the deep snow and the icy Arctic storms.
The Challenge The Challenge (1938) Character: Jean Antoine Carrel
Dramatization of the first climbing of the Matterhorn in 1865.
Condottieri Condottieri (1937) Character: Giovanni Lombardo
Returned from exile where he accompanied his mother Caterina Sforza, Giovanni de 'Medici (1498-1526), becomes, under the name of Giovanni delle Bande Nere, captain of fortune at the service of the idea of a united Italy.
Der heilige Berg Der heilige Berg (1926) Character: Karl
Professional dancer Diotima finds herself the apex of a love triangle when she is pursued by two mountain climbers, Vigo and his older friend.
Der Berg ruft Der Berg ruft (1938) Character: Jean-Antoine Carrel
The Italian mountaineer Carel wants to be the first man to stand on the top of the Matterhorn. Since the climb is very difficult, he agrees to try it together with the British mountaineer Whymper. But due to an intrigue this agreement is dropped and the two man try it on the same day with two different teams and then disaster strikes.
Die Macht der Bilder: Leni Riefenstahl Die Macht der Bilder: Leni Riefenstahl (1993) Character: Himself
This documentary recounts the life and work of one of most famous, and yet reviled, German film directors in history, Leni Riefenstahl. The film recounts the rise of her career from a dancer, to a movie actor to the most important film director in Nazi Germany who directed such famous propaganda films as Triumph of the Will and Olympiad. The film also explores her later activities after Nazi Germany's defeat in 1945 and her disgrace for being so associated with it which includes her amazingly active life over the age of 90.
Der große Sprung Der große Sprung (1927) Character: Toni
A young Italian girl living in the Dolomites falls in love with a member of a tourist party skiing on the nearby mountains.
Der Kaiser von Kalifornien Der Kaiser von Kalifornien (1936) Character: Johann August Suter
The film follows the life story of Johann Augustus Suter, the owner of Sutter's Mill, famous as the birthplace of the great California Gold Rush of 1848.
Der verlorene Sohn Der verlorene Sohn (1934) Character: Tonio Feuersinger
Story of the trials and tribulations of a German who emigrates to the US during the Great Depression.
Berge in Flammen Berge in Flammen (1931) Character: Florian Dimai
Two of Germany's best and busiest directors collaborated on Berge in Flammen (Mountain in Flames). The storyline should be of interest to pro-ecologists, inasmuch as the directors take to task the warmongers of the world for despoiling the natural beauties of the European mountain ranges with their shell-fire. The final outrage occurs during a battle between the Austrians and the Italians in the Dolomites, culminating with the destruction of an entire mountain (hence the film's title). The harrowing images on screen were complemented perfectly by the musical score of Giuseppe Beece. Also known as The Doomed Batallion, Berge in Flammen was filmed in three different languages -- German, English, French -- for a total cost of $150,000.
Der Sohn der weißen Berge Der Sohn der weißen Berge (1930) Character: Hans Turri

The Doomed Battalion The Doomed Battalion (1932) Character: Florian Di Mai

Der Rebell Der Rebell (1932) Character: Severin Anderlan
