When Bob Stokes, a wealthy New York clubman, loses his fortune, he is jilted by his fiancée Marcia Fontaine. He then wanders to an upstate lumber camp where he impresses the owner, Henry Willard, with his leadership and fighting abilities. After Stokes quells a strike engineered by the previous foreman, Robert Brummon, who is really a Bolshevik agitator, to prevent shipments of lumber for government contracts, Brummon, seeking revenge, sets the forest on fire, but Stokes controls it. Willard then sends for Stokes to oversee his New York shipyards where a government "mystery ship" is under construction. After Stokes and Willard's daughter Helen fall in love, Brummon gets Marcia to attempt to seduce Stokes. Marcia lures Stokes to her apartment, where Brummon plans to kill him, but he escapes when he learns that a time bomb is set to destroy the ship.

When Mary learns of Judd's stagnation and fast style of living, she rushes to New York to rescue him. When he sees her, Judd realizes that Mary is the prime inspiration for all his statues and renews his love for her.

As Reid is about to be overcome, an Indian slips a dagger into his hand. Reid is about to stab O'Hara when The Good Samaritan appears and stops the fight. Reid and the O'Hara set aside their differences and decide to become partners.

Jeb Russell and his son Matt run a bootlegging operation in the basement of the New England schoolhouse where Mercy Brent teaches. When her sweetheart John Hale and his revenue agents attempt to break up the operation, John is accused of killing Jeb during a struggle. A tramp named Brent later admits to the murder, claiming that Matt was his accomplice. The police discover Matt's image imprinted on a schoolhouse window by a lightning bolt, verifying Brent's story. Meanwhile, Matt abducts Mercy and takes her aboard the bootleggers' schooner. John and his men come to her rescue and Matt is arrested.

Mark has been working hard to earn money for an operation Mary, which Doctor Welsh and Doctor Boyd agree to perform without telling him how dangerous it is. When Mary dies Mark receives a letter detailing the doctor’s risk-taking, filled with vengeance Mark kills Boyd, but Welsh flees to safety. Mark is imprisoned, but Violet convinces him to marry her, satisfying a stipulation in her late aunt's will. Mark escapes taking Welsh and Violet hostage. They are set upon by a villain and in the confrontation Welsh’s cowardly act shows Violet Mark’s true worth and the pair escapes to freedom across the Canadian border.

Yvette becomes attracted to her friend’s brother, Rex, she avoids him after she learns that he wants his prospective bride to come from a good family. Yvette becomes a burlesque queen, but a distraught Elois tries to kill her to save her soul and then commits suicide, leaving the bloodied knife in the hands of her drunken husband, who then is arrested. Later, Yvette finds happiness with Rex.
