Mate, a lonely, divorced real estate agent is put in charge by his boss to sell a suburban storage building. The storage is rented by the Chinese, who keep their semi-legal goods here before selling them on the market. The stock comprising of several thousands of boxes is guarded by a Chinese man, Wu, who also lives in the storage. During this forced association a strange friendship begins between the two lonely men, even though Wu is told by his boss to prevent the sale of the storage under all circumstances. The boss is also giving enticing promises to Wu to help him realize his dream: go back to China and create his own football team. The situation is further complicated by the pizza girl, who is equally liked by both men and stirs up the strange life of the storage.

He has stolen his father's lathe, which he himself has worked on for decades since his beloved father's death, from the factory that was shut down. An American tourist arrives in the village with a metal detector and begins investigating the border. It turns out that his father's plane crashed nearby at the end of the war, and he wants to find it. The pub is immediately in an uproar and the investigation begins. They find the grave of the Americans, but not everyone is there. Csornai wants to make a big deal of it, so he starts investigating. But the story takes an interesting turn, and suddenly the American's cherished...

He begins to investigate the crime, interrogate neighbours and suspects, and untangle a complex situation - one that he, himself, complicates even further. For he is a gypsy, who despite being adopted and raised by "regular" Hungarians, has his nose rubbed in his minority status every day. The film, which is based on the novel by Ákos Kertész, is a shrewd genre work full of dusky humour and surreal situations. Tabló follows a vivid succession of strange images that eventually lead to the emergence of the central story about a charismatic police officer on a tireless quest for the truth, though he must fight against virtually everyone and is just as fallible as the next person. Tabló makes a statement on the issue of race and racism - or, indeed, relations between any minority and majority.

He hears advice on preserving one's dignity and self-esteem. He discovers hatred. If he does survive and returns to Budapest, what will he find? What is natural; what is it to be a Jew? Sepia, black and white, and color alternate to shade the mood.
