The death of the Prime Minister causes a stir in the society of a small ducal residence. While Lord Chamberlain von Gillzing hopes to become the deceased's successor, Weber, his former secretary, is relegated to a minor post as archivist. Baroness von Windegg, previously known as the Prime Minister's mistress, also fears losing her social standing. But when the Baroness hands the archivist a thick package, which Gillzing believes contains the late Prime Minister's diaries, both she and the archivist suddenly find themselves in high demand, and everyone in town fears being mentioned in the diary in some compromising way.

After eight years in exile Martin returns to Berlin. He was involved in the German Revolution of 1918/1919 and had to leave the country as a result. Impoverished and lonely, he struggles on alone until the market saleswoman Hanne offers him shelter, although she does not have much money either. They fall in love and Martin even finds work on the construction site for the subway through Tempelhofer Feld. One day, however, he collapses there, whereupon the pregnant Hanne tries to nurse him back to health.

Her father, however, demands that Elza choose between the Count of Trutwitz and an American. Two befriended actors want to help her, pretend to be the Count of Trutwitz and the American, respectively, and visit Mr. Grunner. Of course, they make sure these visits are a fiasco. When the American wants to kidnap Elza, Bernhard comes to the rescue. Mr. Grunner eventually approves of Bernhard.

Hoffmanns Erzählungen (1916)

This movie, directed by Richard Oswald, is based on the operetta "Les contes de Hoffmann" by Jacques Offenbach (1819-1880), which is a genial musical potpourri from various short stories and novels by the Prussian writer, composer, painter, lawyer and judge E.T.A. Hoffmann (1776-1822). While Hoffmann's literary work was longtime considered to be merely fantastical, it was finally researched, in the last years, according to its metaphysical background. Characteristic for Hoffmann's work is his life-long fight against rationalism and for the revelation of nature morte, culminating mostly in carnival-like scenes anticipating literary techniques only described in the works of Bachtin and Bachelard.

When she falls in love with Lieutenant Clairon, her male disguise begins to stand in her way. At a ball she has to to look on helplessly while he’s flirting with other women. But with the help of her friend Röschen, who’s the cousin of Clairon, a happy ending is attained.
