Peter then takes over his father's position as manager, which forces him to break off contact with the young employee Charlotte – he wants to find a more suitable bride. He seems to have found her in Brigitte, Mrs. Hellmers' niece, but she doesn't want much to do with him.

Because her father is in desperate need of money, Lenchen is to marry the creditor Biedermeier instead of her beloved military recruit Michel. In order to prevent that, Robert and Bertram travel to the capital and, under false names, manage to make their way into the house of the Jewish commercial advisor Ipelmeyer, to whom Biedermeier is deep in debt. During an evening costume ball, the bums steal the family jewels and give them to Lenchen’s father. Lenchen and Michael get married and Robert and Bertram flee in a balloon into the sky.

And it just so happens that the pastor’s house is attacked from several sides. The next morening, the rabbit is still on the gable … but stuffed. The storm begins; who has the real rabbit?!?

Eduard flees to his fellow musicians, gets drunk, and seeks solace with Alwine. When she drives him away, he returns contritely to his wife, who forgives him. And now she also knows what is truly wrong with their marriage: her Eduard misses his profession. From now on, he makes music, and she does the laundry.

After speaking to Fabian, the lawyer is convinced he's innocent. But since there is no proof of this, he decides to go and try and find the real murderer himself.
