When brother-in-law Gerd visits Robert, he finds a strange naked young woman in the bedroom and neighbor Doris hiding in the laundry box. But Robert and the two women are able to explain the situation when his wife returns from her short vacation. She sees that her husband is also made for housework and wants them to share it more in future.

Master baker Oskar Lorenz is plagued by a number of worries, because almost every day one of his employees is affected by a different "ailment", making it difficult for the bakery to meet the plan. After all, Lorenz and his team have to ensure that fresh bread rolls and, above all, Berlin country bread can be sold to customers on time every day. And Oskar alone cannot fill all the gaps in the staff. To remedy this situation, Oskar's sister Ilse has come up with something for her brother: a "disease" that is difficult to diagnose. He is now confined to his bed and can no longer fulfill his duties. Ziegler, his deputy, is deeply impressed by the pitiful sight that his otherwise strong master now presents. This seems to be the first ray of hope for Ilse to cure Oskar's coworker and her brother of their "ailments" at the same time.

He is also short of ideas for the lively stories he is supposed to write. The writer, on the other hand, is not very familiar with the bureaucratic customs of running a department store. He allows all the sales assistants to take their housekeeping day at once, approves 3,000 marks for decoration purposes and approves of all departments of the department store being open until 8pm.

It was supposed to be a cozy Christmas evening with the family. Labor Director Walter Lörke was particularly looking forward to it. But then his daughter Anne surprised him with her future son-in-law Thomas Ostermann. And that's not all: Lörke is to become a grandfather. This doesn't suit him at all, especially as the young man clearly shows his critical attitude towards the state whose ideals Lörke has fought for all his life. An argument ensues - on Christmas Eve. Lörke leaves the apartment in a rage. But he is driven by unrest: He wants to know what kind of person his future son-in-law is and why he has such a negative attitude towards the state. It turns out that Thomas has had bitter experiences with the opportunistic attitudes of many adults and that, although he was the best student in his class, he was not admitted to university because of his critical opinions.

Nikolaus Plaschke in particular, a regular guest and silent admirer of the landlady, fears for his beloved vacation bed. So he devises bold plans to scare the travel agent away.
