Parallax Sounds Parallax Sounds (2012) Character: Self
Director Augusto Contento renders a documentary portrait of Chicago's underground music scene during the 1990s, interviewing many of the era's stars. The city itself is an integral part of the story, strongly affecting the musicians who work there.
Free the Jazz Free the Jazz (2014) Character: N/A
The world-class musical life of Budapest gave us the opportunity to get in conversation with the key members of the contemporary jazz scene. Some names of the interviewees without being exhaustive: Courtney Pine, Mats Gustaffsson, Matthew Shipp, Peter Brötzmann, Paal Nilssen-Love, Soil & Pimp Sessions, Ken Vandermark, Joe McPhee, Conrad Bauer, Trevor Watts.
Musician Musician (2007) Character: N/A
Common sense says you can't make a living in America playing avant-garde improvisational jazz. But Ken Vandermark does it anyway. Among musicians, Vandermark's work ethic is almost mythic. The Chicago reed player has released over 100 albums with nearly 40 ensembles, spends over eight months per year on the road, and lives every other waking moment composing, arranging, performing—and trying to discipline his two hyperactive canines. Though Vandermark was the recipient of a 1999 MacArthur genius grant, he still spends most of his life in smoky clubs and low-budget recording studios, hoping people will plunk down hard-earned cash to hear his wholly non-commercial music. Following the artful cinéma vérité style of the internationally acclaimed Sheriff (Work Series #1), Musician (Work Series #2) forgoes all interviews and voice-overs. It is a fly-on-the-wall time capsule that expertly captures every subtle sound and texture of this most American of art forms.
City of the Winds City of the Winds (2003) Character: himself
Documentary about the Chicago jazz scene.
Ucho wewnętrzne Ucho wewnętrzne (2016) Character: N/A
A fly on the wall documentary examining the passion for jazz improvisation through the reflections of Mikolaj Trzaska and lyrical narration of Andrzej Stasiuk.
