Emberek a havason (1942)

A simple, religious Hungarian woodcutter lives with his wife and boy child with a small community of squatters among the peaceful mountains of Transylvania until a lumber company claims their land and forces them all to become company workers or else leave the land. This 1942 Hungarian film takes a detailed and unflinching look at the hardships of mountain living, and the realistic approach proved influential to the Neorealist movement in Italian cinema. Hungarian master director Istvan Szots won the Biennale Cup at the Venice Film Festival for his auspicious debut, but the film was banned by the Nazis as "too Catholic" and not publicly exhibited until after World War II.

Sándor Vedres, a painter, learns that his success is not due to his talent, but to the intervention of his model, the flirtatious Marianne, and flees to the Transylvanian mountains with a disappointed heart and shaken self-confidence. His calm is disturbed by the appearance of Klara, who looks exactly like Marianne. His barely healed wounds are torn open by the encounter, he runs away upset and falls into an abyss. She is found unconscious. Marianne's sister, the noble-hearted Klára, carefully tends to the stricken man, who soon recovers but remains mute. The mute painter discovers pure love alongside the kind-hearted girl, and his paintings of the mountains are rewarded with a prize at the exhibition in the capital. News of his success attracts the old lover, but not the love of Klára and Sándor.

Ernő, under a pseudonym, takes up a position as a music teacher at a girls' school under the patronage of his grandmother, Countess Szerémy, to meet one of the pretty students, Martha, who later turns out to be the child of her grandmother's disowned son. The Countess agrees to the young couple's marriage, but Márta falls in love with Colonel Örkényi's nephew Kálmán. In the meantime, Ernő's feelings change, and he meets Kálmán's sister Piroska, whom he would prefer to marry. The Colonel, whose planned marriage to Countess Serémy was prevented by her mother when he was young, refuses to hear of it.

Dr Péter Gergely, assistant professor at the University of Budapest, and his wife Mária celebrate their wedding anniversary. They are listening to Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. VI when he is called in sick. Left alone, she goes to an address given by an unknown caller, where she finds her husband in the arms of a strange woman. She does not believe in her husband's innocence, divorces him and marries the lawyer Dr. Tibor Máté, who has been besieging her for years. In despair, Peter attempts suicide, and the unknown girl who caused the tragedy appears at his bedside. The journalist István Bálint discovers that the girl was paid off by Dr. Máté and unmasks the instigator. Peter recovers, but the excitement causes him to lose his memory. Mary and the doctor reminisce about their wedding anniversary. The experiment succeeds, he remembers everything, and they resume their life together where they left off: listening to Tchaikovsky's symphony.

Áll a bál (1939)

The archduke's grandfather wants to thwart the love between Princess Erzsébet and András Balogh, a young man of lower rank. He sends Erzsébet to Switzerland and András Balogh to Warsaw as an embassy secretary. However, Erzsébet follows András to Warsaw, where they both become embroiled in criminal complications when András has to return home with important diplomatic documents. Back home, it turns out that everything happened so that Erzsébet could soften the archduke's grandfather's heart and rescue András from the predicament he got himself into for Erzsébet's sake... The film is set in Warsaw, and the exterior shots were taken just before the outbreak of World War II, so the film still shows Warsaw intact.

Almost all the students of the secondary school at Igló are in love with Évike, daughter of professor Tirtsák. Petky Pali, the wild, rollicking son to the mayor is dreaming about her, too. One of his competitors, Szidor Ákos, denounces him to their teachers. The mayor is also informed about his son's doings, and his personal experiences substantiate the rumours. Yet he was not the better of it in his learning years at Igló! Pali is sacked, and Szidor is reprimanded for his intriguing. The world war breaks out. Pali, as well as his fellow students, goes to the front. Évi continues to wait for him faithfully, and the returning Pali, now an officer, asks her to marry him at the party for the one-time students of Igló.
