Safia Nolin

Biography

Born in Quebec City in 1992, Safia Nolin showed an interest for music at a very young age: at two, she improvised unplugged concerts with her small plastic guitar around her building's pool to her neighbours’ delight. At 17, wanting to achieve her dream of becoming a musician, Safia started learning how to play guitar on her own with a used one offered by her big brother. In 2012, she concocted her first original song, Igloo, inspired by her neighbourhood, Limoilou, for which Safia won the SOCAN Best Song Award during her participation at the 44th edition of the Festival International de la Chanson de Granby. Her debut album Limoilou was released on February 19th, 2015. With these 13 folk-inspired songs, Safia won over fans and critics alike.

2012/Dans le cœur 2012/Dans le cœur (2023) Character: N/A
What remains of the 2012 Quebec student protests? Little has changed in the decade that ensued. Rodrigue Jean and Arnaud Valade exhume images of the battles, recorded live and relayed through the mass media, that flared up as anger and indignation went head-to-head with the rhetoric of power. Against these divisive images, the filmmakers overlay a historical perspective of the state and its police in Montreal, Quebec and Canada, delving into the roots of sanctioned violence. Their compelling glance at the past is, of course, a cry that continues to echo in the present day. While the voices have been silenced, revolt still brews. All it takes is a spark...
La santé mentale : Une note à la fois La santé mentale : Une note à la fois (2021) Character: Self
There is a strong link between singing and mental illness. This documentary tries to break down some prejudices by focusing on the music industry environment. To achieve this feat of awareness, without falling into moralization, popular artists from here lend themselves to the game of this therapy.
La Vénus d'argent La Vénus d'argent (2023) Character: Safia
A gender-questioning stock market trader is determined to make it in the world of finance — not for the glory or wealth, but because it's leading them on the path to freedom.
Le grand retour des annulés Le grand retour des annulés (2025) Character: Self (archive footage)
Banished and then forgotten, the canceled are reappearing. Marie-France Bazzo conducts a clear-eyed investigation into this return: what does it reveal about our relationship to forgiveness, justice, and forgetting? Was it a necessary evil? How do we cancel… and reintegrate?
