Neal Morse

Biography

As a young musician, Neal’s dream was like many others – to find success in the pop music world. But after years of struggling in the Los Angeles singer-songwriter scene, he realized that this dream would not materialize. Rejecting conventional wisdom, Morse took a courageous step: He about-faced and devoted himself to progressive rock, the music truly in his heart. The obscure and fiercely competitive genre held little chance of commercial success. Undaunted, he formed the quirkily-named Spock’s Beard with his brother, Alan. They recorded The Light with what money they could scrape together. Against all odds, it was a breakout success, sending shockwaves through the small genre’s community. Over the next 10 years, Spock’s Beard released 10 critically acclaimed CDs and 2 DVDs, ascending to the top of the prog world. Neal also released 6 CDs and 3 DVDs with Transatlantic, the heralded prog supergroup comprised of the genre’s best musicians. The proverbial wayward son, Neal had finally found the success he sought. On the outside he seemed to have it all. On the inside, however, something was missing. Morse came to realize that for him, embracing the Christian faith was the fulfillment of his spiritual quest. His walk was at once gradual and sudden – and as with so many, completely unexpected. As he continued, his path increasingly revealed more of what his heart had sought all along. Yet he also began to find his career growing at odds with his faith. The rising spiritual tension and increasing commercial success finally came to a head with the release of Snow (2002), the group’s magnum opus... and swan song with Morse. The extraordinary 2-CD rock opera, composed by Morse, was widely acclaimed as the group’s finest. But it was the end of the era. Neal felt God calling him out of his former musical life and into the unknown. He made the agonizing decision to leave both Spock’s Beard and Transatlantic. Despite having finally achieved the success he had long sought, Morse had to begin all over again; musically, emotionally and spiritually.

Spock's Beard: The Making of Snow Spock's Beard: The Making of Snow (2004) Character: Self
"The Making Of Snow" is fully dedicated to Neal's last studio work with Spock's Beard. The viewer is present when Neal is collecting his first ideas for the album overture, he watches the band jamming and recording and looks over the guys' shoulders during the mixing and mastering. In addition, this DVD documents major parts of the band's story: Neal's last two acoustic shows with the band. These two performances were the only promotion for "Snow", because shortly after that Neal announced his departure from Spock's Beard. At that time, however, Neal had already come to this decision, so during the unplugged gigs he was fighting back his tears. There was no concert tour for the album.
The Making of Flying Colors The Making of Flying Colors (2012) Character: Self
Go behind the scenes and watch the band’s songs come to life through the extraordinary collaborative process that unfolded as the artists grew to know each other musically, as well as personally. Against the ticking clock, watch as Neal, Mike, Casey, Dave, Steve and Peter defy the odds, creating one of the year’s most acclaimed albums in an incredible nine days. Experience the candid moments, lost ideas, original performances, frustrations, joy, reflections and friendships as they happened. See where it all came from, and how it became Flying Colors.

“As you probably know, for Transatlantic’s The Absolute Universe, I took the lead role in putting together the “Breath of Life” version. If you have the Blu-ray, you will have seen the Making of documentary which mainly focuses on the work we did in Sweden. This month’s IC release tells “the rest of the story” – the long journey from the initial idea to edit in March 2020 to November 2020, when the final mixes were signed off, and everything in between – which includes me catching Coronavirus! The documentary is around 70 minutes long, and you’ll see me doing some of the lyric rewrites, adding overdubs and chopping and editing this thing!”

Randy has put together a short tour doc and we have a bunch of footage from the concert in Athens from 2013, and I think you are really going to enjoy this exclusive DVD coming your way this May. The footage was shot by the venue, I think, and it is not the highest quality in the world and the audio is camera audio unmixed and unpolished, however I think you will enjoy seeing and hearing us at this rare performance in Athens. My recollection of that night was that even though we were possibly as tired as I have ever been going into a performance, that is was one of the best gigs I have ever performed. A very special night indeed." – Neal Concert (86 mins) 1 Momentum 2 Author Of Confusion 3 Thoughts Pt 5 4 We All Need Some Light 5 World Without End 6 King Jesus 7 Sing It High Documentary (26 mins) 8 "Israel, Greece And Poland"

This time around we have the video and audio of Inner Circle show from Morsefest in London (well Brentwood!) in 2024! At Brentwood, we already had Ross Jennings along to do support on Friday evening and he also sang Supernatural during Testimony 2. So it seemed like a cool opportunity to have a 2/3 of D’Virgilio, Morse & Jennings set – we did two songs for the first time before a live audience, Julia and The Weary One! Of course I had my faithful friends Randy George, Bill Hubauer, Philip Martin, Julie Harrison and Amy Pippin join me – plus Francis Norman who played violin during the main shows came to join us to add a different element to the sounds. Setlist: 1. Open Wide the Flood Gates 2. To Love You and Be Alive 3. Already There 4. More Than I Am (with Talon David) 5. Julia (with Ross Jennings) 6. The Weary One (with Ross Jennings) 7. Then I’m joined by the guys from The Resonance, and we have some intros to them before we talk through a playback of the title track from the album that was released that day: No Hill For A Climber. So you get to hear about all the various elements that went into that song. 1. Already There 2. To Love You And Be Alive 3. The Kind of Heart 4. The Resonance – introductions 5. FROM NEAL MORSE: This video includes the two final shows I played as a member of Spock’s Beard. They were both acoustic performances to relatively small groups, to promote the SNOW album. This was the only time some of these songs were played by the line up who recorded the album, and I have to say it was a very emotional time for me, knowing that this would be the final time I would play with my brothers in the band. The setlist for each show is slightly different but they include: “The Good Don’t Last,” “Thoughts II,” “Stranger In A Strange Land,” “Open Wide The Floodgates,” “Pride (In The Name Of Love),” “Carie,” “June,” “Looking For Answers,” “Solitary Soul,” “Wind At My Back,” and “The Doorway.”

The video is divided into four parts, each offering a unique glimpse into Neal Morse’s world: Part One features an intimate interview with Neal at home, where he sits at the piano and talks about his approach to writing music. It’s a candid look into his creative process. Part Two shifts to a more lighthearted setting: the Morse brothers gathered around the dinner table with friends, singing funny songs and sharing laughs. It’s a warm, family-style jam session. Part Three is a touching piano recital by Neal’s son, Wil. Wil plays piano while Neal joins him on guitar as they perform a heartfelt rendition of “Cradle to the Grave” together. Part Four takes us to a live radio interview in Nashville, where Neal performs “Sing It High” and a few other songs live on the air. It’s a rollicking good time that captures the energy and spontaneity of a live show.

With 2DVDs and 3CDs, Testimony 2 - Live in Los Angeles is Neal's most opulent live release as a solo musician. Both the DVDs and CDs capture the concert at the Whittier Community Center from May 28, 2011. The tour itself was Neal's biggest tour ever to date and, for the US gigs only, features the reunion of most of the musicians from the original Testimony band: Neal's 2011 album Testimony 2 - the sequel to Testimony (2003) - could thus be performed live in full length by some of Neal's longtime friends Mike Portnoy, Eric Brenton, Rick Altizer and Mark Leniger. Mike Portnoy's wish to "finally" perform some of the greatest longtracks of Neal's solo catalog on a stage could be fulfilled. Wonderful renditions of "The Separated Man" and "Seeds of Gold" are surely a highlight on this release.

It was recorded in December 2019 in London on a short and highly anticipated tour, directly after the release of their studio album "Third Degree". Eric Burdon & The New Animals: Live at the Coach House Eric Burdon & The New Animals: Live at the Coach House (1998) Character: Keyboards
This concert was recorded live at the Coach House on 17th October 1998. The picture quality and sound are excellent, as are all the camera angles. Eric has a great band who do all the songs full justice and reproduce the original sounds where needed (e.g. on San Franciscan Nights and Spill The Wine)- they are Aynsley Dunbar on drums, Dean Restum on guitar, David Meros on bass and Neal Morse on keyboards and guitar. There are also five interesting interviews with Eric where he talks about the history of some of the featured songs. These fit in very well between some of the songs, but I don't feel they spoil the continuity and they do not interrupt any songs. Eric performs as his fans would expect - plenty of stage presence and integrity and on the whole he sings extremely well with far less shouting than he has done on some other concert occasions.
