Der Alpenkönig und der Menschenfeind (1965)

Ever since Rappelkopf was once deceived by a con man, he has become the epitome of a suspicious, stubborn misanthrope and a family nuisance. His wife and daughter, as well as his servants, suffer from his bad moods, accusations, and insinuations. The kind, alpine mountain spirit Astragalus, the King of the Alps, wants to rescue the grumpy man from his constant discontent and misanthropy. He promises to remedy his situation and makes Rappelkopf an offer he cannot refuse: he is to become his alter ego, to slip into another, better form. In the guise of his brother-in-law, the tyrant is to visit his family to convince himself of their loyalty and love. The King of the Alps, in turn, wants to appear as Rappelkopf, the living mirror of the true family despot, in order to morally purify him through self-knowledge.

A greater-Vienna seniors' home is run like a prison by the stuck-up female executive and staff. Hippie-type rebel Rochus 'Rocco' Siwak incurs a community service to be spent there as orderly. Sympathizing with seniors who still aspire to some dignity and self-realization, he helps them get around the rules, such as smuggling in contraband, and ends up inspiring them to form a rock band and enter a free podium competition. Ernst Stadler is a successful, award-winning chef with his own gourmet restaurant. His older brother Ludwig is also a chef, but is currently in prison. Adrian, the youngest of the three, is a nurse and gay. When their mother dies, they travel together to the funeral in Saxony-Anhalt. There they find a clue about Wickerl's biological father. They track down Ernst's father in Hungary. He had once abandoned his pregnant mother. Adrian is not a brother in the biological sense; he was adopted by his mother as a foundling. Nevertheless, they come to the conclusion: "And the three of us are still brothers."
