An ageing farmer and his young wife live in a lonely hut in the mountains. The farmer is a smuggler who the border police are trying to put a stop to. A young border hunter is sent to seduce the woman in order to find out where the man is hiding the smuggled goods. He in turn urges the woman to turn the border hunter's head so that he can go about his business undisturbed. But then the frontier hunter and the woman become truly passionate about each other, and the drama ends with murder and suicide. Based on the stage play by Karl Schönherr.

Marianne, however, has fallen in love with Leopold, a gym teacher; and when he reads an article in the newspaper about the upcoming arrival of Haley's Comet on 19 May, he comes up with an idea how he can prevent the wedding from taking place: He tells Strubel that the world is going to come to an end when the comet shows up, so that Strubel will see the errors of his way, cancel the arranged wedding and will become a better person for it. After Johanna King Charles is crowned at Reims, there breaks the plague over the country in. Now Johanna all the blame on the disaster: God would punish believe in the country for that a heretic; if Johanna were actual a holy, she would deal also with the plague. The waning faith weakens France, England is again on the rise. But Johanna is executed as a witch. Only years later annulled the verdict of the Holy and Johanna explained.
