Biography

While at CBC Vancouver in the 1950s, Ellis met and married an administrator at the station, Louise (née Dutchak). Before they divorced (it is unknown when), the couple had their only child, Vivian. Ellis then went on to work as the beat reporter for CKNW New Westminster from 1963 to 1964 before continuing work at CKWX Vancouver from the mid 1960s to around 1967-68. Apart from broadcasting, Ellis also took part in several local stage plays in and around Vancouver, with the comedy No Time for Sergeants being notable as one of his last known stage performances, as well as the only known play featuring Ellis that has been photographed. By August 1968, Ellis had moved to Hong Kong and started working as a journalist and as a dubber. While living in Hong Kong from 1968 to 1975, he married Barbara (maiden name unknown) and continued to both dub and travel abroad for broadcasting work. In either 1975 or 1976, Ellis moved out of Hong Kong to work for both the American Broadcasting Company and the National Broadcasting Company before eventually settling into West Germany in the early 1980s to work for the European journal of the European Television Service. After retiring from broadcasting in the late 1980s or early 1990s, Ellis moved back to Hong Kong, spending time with old colleagues that he hadn't seen in 15 years and occasionally dubbing. After this, details about Ellis's life are scarce, and Marc Toole, a former voice actor and the son of dubbing writer / director Bob Toole, confirmed that Ellis had passed away.
