Dani, a 9 year old boy, has a dog named Pirata; a large black Newfoundland. One day Pirata suffers a fatal accident. Danis life takes a tragic turn, but Pirata returns from the other side as a ghost. The whole family moves to Veracruz City. In Veracruz the family meets Paddy OBrien, the watchman who takes care of the old lighthouse. The boy and the old man form a great friendship, in part because not only is Paddy able to see Pirata, but he teaches Dani to see him.
